If you don’t think that you have seen a high engagement hub out in the wild, you have probably at least heard one. High Engagement Hubs are instantly recognisable thanks to their loud buzzing sound that they make when freewheeling. Some riders dont like the noise that a high engagement hub makes, where we tend to think that the noise is pretty cool.

There are however a number of advantages of using a high engagement hub - these hubs make a real difference on bikes which are raced, as well as bikes that are ridden purely recreationally. High engagement hubs work by eliminating the delay in your crank rotation when you start pedalling.

The instant engagement from a high engagement hub is of benefit to mountain bikers and road cyclists alike. On a mountain bike, one of the biggest advantages to using this type of hub is to provide instant power on either a technical climb, or when backpedaling to avoid a crank strike, this split second difference in power output and reaction makes a real difference on the trails.

Similarly, on a road bike the benefit of a high engagement hub is the instant availability of power when pedalling, meaning the difference between winning and losing a sprint section. There are however a few downsides of switching to a high engagement hub, they take more
maintenance and servicing than normal hubs. High Engagement Hubs can also cause wear on the derailleur of the bike, if the suspension on a mountain bike compresses - as there’s no play in the freehub.
