Handlebar Stems
At Westbrook Cycles, we stock and supply an excellent range of Road Bike Stems. The range of stems present a huge array of choice, and although road bike stems may seem like an unimportant piece of equipment when it comes to design, choosing the right stem has a big impact on the handling and feel of the bike.
The first aspect to consider when choosing a bike stem is the length of the stem and how that can affect the performance and position of the bike. If the bike stem is too long - you will be far too stretched out on the bike, and if the stem is too short - the steering of a road bike can become clumsy. A good rule of thumb for stem length is to choose a stem between 90mm and 130mm.
Another factor to consider is the rise (also known as the angle) of the stem. The vast majority of cyclists will choose a stem with a ten degree or less angle - which gives a good position with a low rise. Leisure riders will value a more upright riding position, and racers will want a lower riding position.
Road Bike Stems are usually made from alloy, although there are titanium and carbon fibre road bike stems on the market - for those looking to shave as much weight as possible from the bike.
