A dedicated gravel bike wheelset, instead of a road bike wheel or a mountain bike wheel is a relatively new product. The choice depends on the type of riding the gravel rider is carrying out; a mountain bike wheel will be best suited for heavier off-road use, and a road wheel will be more than fine for riding on smooth, packed surfaces such as fire roads and trails, whereas gravel wheels are a perfect compromise between the two. The best gravel wheels are lightweight and incredibly durable - able to handle all of the terrain you can throw at them.
There are a number of choices to make when choosing a new set of gravel wheels, and you can use either carbon fibre wheels, or alloy wheels. It’s also important to consider rim width and what tyre sizes you favour, with the road bike wheel or mountain bike wheel sizing choice also encompassing whether or not to choose 700c wheels or 650b wheels.
