At Westbrook Cycles, a large amount of the mtb tyres that we supply are tubeless, or at least ‘tubeless ready’.
Tubeless tyres are now the default on mid-range and high-end mountain bikes - and they are also becoming popular options for gravel tyres and road tyres too. Tubeless MTB tyres are almost identical to older style clincher tyres, it’s on the internals of the tyre where all of their differences are. The beads form an airtight seal with the rim, and sealant is used within the tyre, applied thorugh the valve - which remains in liquid form, turning solid if there are small punctures on the tyre.
There are many advantages in using tubeless mtb tyres. They can be run at lower pressures than clincher tyres, without the increased risk of pinch flats and punctures, allowing you to benefit from extra grip and compliance when riding off road terrain. Tubeless tyres also have a lower rolling resistance vs clincher tyres - and are less likely to have a puncture even when
running at normal tyre pressures.
