There are just a couple of tyre manufacturers that have placed the most research and development into tyre production for downhill mountain bikers, and the two which dominate the industry are Maxxis and Schwalbe. These tyre brands are represented by downhill mountain bike champions on the world stage, making it an easy choice for most downhill bikers to follow.

The range of downhill tyres they produce cater for all riding and weather conditions - so you can expect to find downhill tyres which are designed for hard ground and soft ground, covering fast rolling dry trails as well as sloppy, muddy trails with wet obstacles, such as roots.

Downhill tyres all have aggressive tread patterns, and downhill specific designs and features such as increased sidewall protection, for the inevitable drops and impacts these tyres have to make. These tyres perform brilliantly on trails, but do not perform too well as a XC tyre - they are not efficient, and maximise grip performance over any other factor. Having said that, not all downhill tyres are that aggressive, and there are a number of semi slick downhill tyres for dry, compact and fast trails.
