Chainsets
The easiest way to describe a chainset and what a chainset includes, is the components that power the bike forward when you turn the pedals - providing power to the rear wheel and driving the bike forward. The chainset is a massively important component on any road bike - and it is the first part of the bike which transforms your pedalling, through gearing into movement.
Although many customers are not too interested in the chainset on their bike, settling for the one which was supplied as part of the kit - customers do often come to us looking to either replace a worn chainset, or purchase an upgraded chainset. In doing so, customers can get their chainset just right - choosing the right length for them and their bike. If a chainset is too long for example, the knees and legs can be overstretched, causing injury and fatigue. If a chainset is too short, the chainset will not generate as much force - making cycling harder work.
The higher number on the chainset, which translates to the number of teeth, means that it’s more difficult to pedal up to speed, but easier to maintain that speed once enough speed has been achieved. One of the most popular types of chainset that we supply is called a ‘compact chainset’ These chainsets offer a great balance between hill friendly gearing, as well as speed maintenance.
