Stem Spacer Kit For Syncros Creston iC Stem/Handlebars (2020)

£25.00

The stem of a bike is a relatively simple component - it has one job, and that’s to make sure that the handlebars remain clamped to the fork steerer. Handlebar Stems however, do vary - so it’s important to choose a handlebar stem which not only fits your bike, but also provides the performance that you need.

On this page, you can find our complete range of handlebar stems - encompassing mountain bike stems, road bike stems and BMX stems. The most common type of handlebar stem found above are aheadstem designs, also known as a threadless stem. These stems bolt directly onto the steerer tube. The most common material for these stems is aluminium, although carbon fibre models are available at the top end of the range.

Size wise, there are a number of different steer tube sizes available, with 1 1/8th being the most common - older bikes may have a 1’’ stem. There are also a range of clamp sizes to fit handlebars, mountain bike bars are usually 25.4mm or 31.8mm for oversize handlebars.

Stem length is one of the most important decisions you can make when it comes to choosing a new handlebar stem for your bike, especially a mountain bike. Most road risers choose stem length based on their bike fit and position - for those mountain biking, the stem makes a huge difference in how a mountain bike handles. Those choosing shorter stems can expect more responsive and dynamic handling - whilst those choosing longer stems provide a more pedal efficient precision. Longer stems are favoured by cross country racers, whilst downhill riders choose very short stems. Stem Rise is another aspect which needs some consideration - the degree of rise on your stem will depend on your own personal preferences, when it comes to comfort.

Some of the most common and most popular mountain bike stems include:

Cross Country Stems

Between 100-120mm long and flat, this allows the rider to stretch out for a racing position. Carbon fibre is often used on XC stems to provide weight saving benefits.

Trail Stem

Between 60-80mm in length and with a rise of around six degrees, provides a good upright riding position for quick steering response. Mostly constructed from aluminium.

Downhill Stem

Downhill MTB stems are very short, just 40-50mm in length. These stems provide a mega quick response to steering, and most are made from aluminium, but carbon options are available.

Road Bike Stems

Above, you can also find our complete range of road bike stems. The most important thing to consider when buying a new road bike stem is the length of the stem, as this will dictate the fit and handling of the bike.

Cyclists looking for the most aerodynamic position on the bike, which is also the fastest - should choose a 120mm+ stem. Those riding casually, should choose a shorter stem for a more upright riding position, which prioritises comfort over speed & performance.
