Suspension
Forks
A suspension fork is one of the best investments you can make in your mountain bike, as well as soaking up a lot of the bumps and ruts which come with mountain biking - suspension forks also allow more accurate wheel placement, as well as improving grip and balance in the process.
As with everything mountain biking, there a ton of suspension forks to choose from - and making yourself familiar with a few of the basics, certainly helps you choose the right fork, for both your bike and your riding style. The first thing to bear in mind, is that you need to choose the right fork for your wheel size, this is easy enough as mountain bikes are typically offered with 26 inch, 27.5inch and 29 inch wheels. Other sizes to familiarise yourself with include axle diameter.
The next thing to consider is the suspension technology within the fork, of which there are two options. Air suspension forks operate with a chamber of compressed air which acts as a spring. Air suspension forks can be easily adjusted to suit riding preferences pretty easily, whilst spring operated suspension forks will need stiffer, or softer springs fitting.
There is more to think about too! Although many riders are tempted to choose a suspension fork with the longest possible travel - that’s not always the best route to go down. Only those tackling downhill trails should look for maximum suspension travel (typically around 200mm) with those looking for a mix of cross country riding, should choose a relatively short travel fork of around 80mm.
