How To Sell Your Mountain Bike For More £££

If you are looking to sell your mountain bike, either to free up some cash - or to fund a new mountain bike, there’s a number of things you can do to maximise the money you get for your bike. Although we cannot completely rule out you receiving ridiculous lowball offers ‘cash today’ we can share a few things that you can do to make the bike sales as smooth and as profitable as possible, allowing you to reinvest with a brand new mountain bike from us.

Wash the Bike

Although this may seem obvious, it’s often overlooked - especially if you are selling the bike because you could not get on with it. Make sure the bike is well cleaned, and all the parts and components are well lubricated, showing the potential buyer that it has been well looked after.

Change Consumables

One of the best ways to give any bike a new lease of life, is to change the parts you can change at home - which tend to look the most tired and worn out. New grips and pedals are a good starting point, as is a new saddle and new tyres if required. All of these small changes avoid the buyer finding something to criticise and bargain over. If you have already bought your new bike, and you prefer your old saddle or tyres, you can often just carry out a straight swap.

If you are selling an expensive mountain bike, it can also be worth changing the chain and cables if they are showing signs of wear and tear. This is a balancing act however, and you do not want to spend too much money on the bike, that you will not recover during a sale.

Mini Service

It’s safe to say that the buyer will more than likely want to be shown that everything works on the bike. If you can do, give the bike a DIY service at home - or take it to your local bike workshop for a service. Most services can be carried out using a few core maintenance tools and replacement parts.

Take the Right Photos

Spend some time taking the right photos of your bike, don’t rely on old catalogue shots - buyers want to know what the bike looks like when they come to see it. Clean the bike and take some ‘clean shots’ of the bike. You can upload photos taken out on the trail, but be careful not to show photos showing the bike having too much of a hard time!
