Giant Contend AR3 Review

The Giant Contend AR3 is one of the best 'all rounder' bikes that we have stock at Westbrook Cycles - Giant claim it’s been designed for use by road riders who have a 'thirst for adventure'. Translated into the real world, this is a high performance road bike which rides smoothly across a lot of different terrain and riding conditions - it handles smooth tarmac as well as it handles bumpy, uneven roads and even canal towpaths. At all times, this bike delivers stacks of confidence and control, which flatters the riders ability.

Giant Contend AR3 Geometry

Thanks to the increase in the hybrid bike market, there’s a huge amount of experience and excellence in creating road bikes which have a relaxed geometry. This bike perfectly bridges the gap between the need for speed and pace, alongside comfort - which allows this bike to become an all day machine. The geometry is lively and playful, which is tamed by a long wheelbase - which provides excellent levels of stability.

Giant Contend AR3 Components

The Contend AR3 arrives with well spec’d Shimano components and groupset. The groupset is the Shimano Sora - which provides accurate shifting, as well as a very wide range - this bike has a 11-34 cassette which gives one to one ratios for very low gearing.

As expected at this price point, the AR3 has mechanical disc brakes - which provide excellent braking performance across all weather conditions. The bike also has thru-axles and also has tubeless ready tyres, allowing an easy conversion - and effectively reducing the risk of pinch punctures.

The frame can also accommodate 38mm tyres - although this bike is not classed as a gravel bike, with these larger tyres fitted, riders can push themselves to light off road conditions without too many difficulties.

Riding the Giant Contend AR3

We have been lucky enough to get our hands on the Contend AR3 for a thorough test ride, and we were really impressed by the bike's long distance performance - it's comfortable and the D-Fuse seatpost has been designed to absorb the everyday vibrations and bumps on the roads. The bike we rode was fitted with 32mm tyres - which felt great for everyday recreational riding.

The bike is not the lightest bike on the market, which is slightly noticeable in the climbs - but this is made up for by excellent handling. The bike descents well, and the brakes provide excellent stopping power. It's a great bike for everyday riding, which is sporty enough to handle bursts of power.

The bike also felt good on the commute to the office, it works well as a fitness and leisure bike - and it's compatible with mudguards and fenders - which means it can be a true year round workhorse. In this highly competitive market segment, this bike demands consideration.
