We are all used to seeing huge capacity electric mountain bikes out on the trails, these big and bold bikes can seem massive compared to non electric mountain bikes. As the electric mountain bike industry continues to grow in popularity, there’s a new range of e-mtb growing in popularity - the lightweight electric mountain bike.

These bikes have been created in response to a demand for electric mountain bikes to feel and ride much more like a regular mountain bike, compared to the bigger and burlier electric models, whilst enasuring that the rider can still enjoy the benefits of electric assitance when out on the bike.

Another benefit of these sleeker and cut down electric mountain bikes, is that they are much more subtle than larger electric mountain bikes, allowing the rider to enjoy a design which is not too dissimilar from a standard mountain bike.

The main benefit of shedding the weight however, is a lighter and more nimble bike - riders benefit from being on a lighter and more nimble bike across all disciplines, but especially in cross country riding.

Materials on these lightweight e-bikes vary, with carbon framed electric mountain bikes playing an important part in keeping overall weight down. Smaller motors and batteries also play a part, and although the capacity may be lower on a lightweight e-mtb compared to a larger bike, the more lightweight the mountain bike is, the less power and in turn, battery capacity it needs.
