XC Mountain Bike FAQ

Are XC Bikes fast?

Cross Country bikes are all about raw, blistering pace across a range of off road terrain. The light weight design of these bikes means they also perform well on trails and singletrack - especially on trails which flow well, and carry decent levels of speed.

Can XC Bikes go downhill?

Cross Country Mountain bikes, also known as XC Mountain Bikes do not have the same amount of travel as a downhill mountain bike or an enduro mountain bike, they have less. Instead of being designed to smash downhill trails, they are designed to cut across country with speed and pace. Their lightweight design however, and their suspension does allow them to be ridden downhill, and they can handle both trails and singletrack.

Are XC Bikes fast?

XC Bikes have an aggressive geometry which allows them to be ridden hard by riders. The seat is positioned right over the cranks of the bike, allowing for the rider to put maximum power down into the pedals. The components and frame of a XC bike is lightweight, allowing for excellent progress uphill. These bikes are designed to sprinted on, compete on and be ridden hard.

How fast are XC Riders?

XC riders race for approximately two hours, riding around eight laps of an off-road circuit. They reach speeds of between 20-25km/h across the course, riding varied terrain including singletrack.

Are Hardtails better for XC?

This entirely depends on your preferences and budget. A lightweight hardtail mountain bike is incredibly efficient, but most cross country races are won by lightweight full suspension mountain bikes. Full Suspension Mountain Bikes are also more comfortable than hardtails across varied terrain.

Can you ride Enduro on a XC Bike?

Whilst some riders will be able to negotiate downhill trails on a XC bike - it’s not recommended. Enduro trails can be very technical, with steep obstacles and sections, and the shorter travel suspension of an XC bike will struggle with larger obstacles and the most challenging terrain.
