Ways To Clean Your Mountain Bike Goggles
Mountain biking is an exhilarating and demanding sport that provides plenty of challenges and rewards. Whether you're flying down a technical trail or taking a scenic cross country route, you need clear vision to stay safe and enjoy the ride.
One of the most important pieces of equipment for any mountain biker is their goggles. These goggles protect your eyes from debris, dirt, UV rays, and wind. However, they don't stay clear and clean forever. Dust, mud, sweat, and smudges can accumulate on the lenses on both sides, making it difficult to see and reducing the lifespan of your expensive lenses. In this post, we share some of the products we use, and the things we do - to keep your goggles in the best condition.
Begin By Rinsing Your Goggles
Before you start cleaning your goggles, it is essential to remove any loose dirt or dust particles from the lenses. Hold them under running water or use a soft-bristled brush to remove any debris from the frame and lenses. Doing this will minimize the potential for the dirt to scratch the lenses while wiping them later on during the cleaning process.
Use The Right Cleaning Solution
When it comes to cleaning your mountain bike goggles, avoid using household cleaning agents like soap and window cleaner. These products can damage the lenses or leave a residue that obstructs vision. Instead, use a dedicated lens cleaner that's designed for sports eyewear. Apply a few drops of the solution to each lens and rub gently in circles with a microfiber cloth or a soft lens-cleaning cloth. We recommend the Muc-Off Lens & Goggle Cleaner, it lasts for a long time & has been specifically designed to tackle exactly the sort of grime that accumulates on goggles.
Don't Rub Too Hard
Rubbing your goggles too hard can scratch the lenses, which can be frustrating and expensive to replace. Instead, wipe the lenses gently in a circular motion. Avoid using any rough or abrasive materials or applying too much pressure. A good microfibre cloth, such as Peaty’s Bamboo cloths work as good as anything else we have tried.
Air-Drying Is Best
When you're done cleaning your goggles, the best way to dry them is by air-drying. Avoid using paper towels or any other materials that can scratch or leave residue on the lenses. Instead, allow your goggles to air dry in a clean and dust-free area.
Use A Protective Case
One of the best ways to keep your goggles clean and scratch-free is by using a protective carrying case. When you're not using your goggles, place them in a case that is dedicated to storing the goggles. This will protect the lenses from scratches, dust, and debris when not in use, making it easier to keep them clean for the next ride. Having said that, most goggles are supplied with a carrying pouch, which does a good job of protecting them in most situations.
Clean & maintain your goggles in line with how you clean & maintain your mountain bike, and you won’t go far wrong.
