The Evolution Of Dirt Jump Bikes

Dirt Jump bikes have come a long way since they were first introduced, unlike other styles of bikes - dirt jump bikes were born out of combining the very best bits of different sports, such as freestyle BMX, BMX racing and also mountain biking - dirt jump bike brings together all of these different elements into a cycling discipline that is high on adrenaline and is undoubtedly, incredibly cool.

Dirt Jump Bike History

The origin of dirt jumping and dirt jumping bikes, as mentioned above can be traced back to the BMX mad 1970s and 1980’s - when riders were busy modifying their BMX to tackle dirt jumps and mounds, as people pushed the very limits of themselves and their machines - it became clear that specialised equipment and bikes were needed, if the sport was to continue becoming bigger and better.

It was not until the 1990’s and the increase in the mountain bike market and industry where riders started dirt jumping on larger framed bikes with larger wheels, this period of time saw the introduction of the first dirt jump bikes - which drew on designs and geometry of both BMX bikes and mountain bikes.

These bikes featured strong and hardy frames, single speed drivetrains and suspension forks - allowing some cushioning and comfort when landing big jumps. The recipe for a successful and strong dirt jump bike was born, but they have continued to improve and receive updates in recent times.

Today you can expect dirt jump bikes to have short chainstays, meaning the bikes remain ‘flickable’ and moveable, you can also expect these bikes to have strong hydraulic disc brakes to provide excellent stopping power, and also a geometry which has a low standover height and very slack head angle, to ensure maximum stability on the ground and in the air. Suspension wise, you can expect to find modern dirt jump bikes with around 100m of front suspension travel.

Most dirt jump bikes continue to have alloy frames - which are tough enough to withstand repeated abuse like these bikes often receive.
