Scott Bikes are one of the largest bike brands in the world, and here at Westbrook Cycles - we have been working with Scott closely, ever since we started in business. Today, we represent the full collection of Scott bikes, ranging from hardtail mountain bikes and gravel bikes, to road race bikes and race specification full suspension mountain bikes. In addition to this range, there’s also a range of Scott Electric Bikes, designed for every terrain - from the smoothest of tarmac to the roughest of downhill trails.
Since Scott started, the brand has consistently pushed the boundaries of cycling technology, making significant contributions to mountain biking, road cycling, and beyond which not only impact Scott bikes, but also the industry as a whole.
In this post, we look at some of Scott’s most defining moments, and the bikes which helped make them the titan that they are today.
1958 - The Beginning
Scott Sports was founded in 1958 by Ed Scott, an engineer and an avid skier from Sun Valley, Idaho. Initially, the company focused on ski poles, but Ed's engineering prowess soon led to innovations across various sports, including motocross where Scott created the first ever set of motocross specific goggles.
1986 - First Mountain Bike
Scott entered the mountain bike market in 1986, capitalizing on the increasing popularity of mountain biking. Scott’s first mountain bike set the stage for future success, design and innovation. This first bike was known as the Scott Superbike and it was followed throughout the 1990’s by other successful and popular mountain bikes including the Scott Pro Racing and the Scott Endorphin.
1989 - Aerodynamic Breakthrough
In 1989, Scott introduced the first aerodynamic handlebar, which made a dramatic impact in the world of competitive cycling. Greg LeMond famously used these handlebars to win the Tour de France in the same year, bringing Scott into the limelight and proving their commitment to innovation.
1991 - Unishock Suspension Fork
Scott continued to innovate in the early '90s with the release of the Unishock suspension fork in 1991. This technology greatly improved the handling and comfort of mountain bikes, making rough terrains more manageable for riders - and it’s almost impossible to find a mountain bike now which does not use a front suspension fork. The next year, in 1992 - Scott unveiled it’s first full suspension mountain bike.
2001 - The CR1 Road Bike
In 2001, the CR1 road bike made waves for its exceptionally lightweight frame, made possible by Scott's Industry leading carbon technology, which used carbon in both the frame of the bike and also the fork.
The CR1 was a favorite among professional cyclists for its performance and agility. The CR1 has now been replaced by the ultra aerodynamic Scott Foil which shares much of its DNA with the CR1.
2003 - Genius Full-Suspension MTB
The Genius full-suspension mountain bike was launched in 2003, featuring an adjustable travel system that allowed riders to easily switch between different suspension settings. This versatility made it an instant hit among mountain bike enthusiasts and this system has grown into the Twinloc system that we know and use today.
2005 - Name Change
In 2005 the name SCOTT USA was changed to Scott Sports - to greater focus on the European cycling market.
2008 - Addict Road Bike
Scott introduced the Addict road bike in 2008, which became one of the lightest road frames on the market. Its performance and responsiveness made it a preferred choice for competitive road cyclists.
2013 - E-Bike Innovations
With the rise of electric bikes, Scott ventured into the e-bike market way back in 2013. These electric bikes have been well received by experts and consumers alike, and the electric range covers road, gravel and mountain bikes.
2020 - Gravel and Beyond
In recent years, Scott has expanded into gravel biking, launching the Addict Gravel bike in 2020 and quickly establishing itself as a world player in the gravel bike industry.
