How To Replace Your Mountain Bike Disc Brake Pads
If you own a mountain bike, you probably know how important it is to have a reliable braking system, especially when you take into consideration the harsh terrain and steep inclines mountain bikes need to perform on. Most mountain bikes today use disc brakes, which provide increased stopping power and control VS older style rim brakes, which can often still be found on road bikes.
One of the main reasons that bike brake performance declines over time. To keep your bike performing as it should, and in doing so - keep you safe on the trails, you will need to periodically replace bike brake pads. Fortunately, this is a simple process that can be done at home with just a few key tools you may already own. In this post, we take a step-by-step look at what you need to do to replace your brake pads.
Gather Your Tools
To replace your mountain bike brake pads, you will need a few tools, including a 5mm Allen key, a set of replacement brake pads, and a clean rag. Before you begin the process, make sure you have all the necessary tools to finish the job.
Remove The Wheel
The first step in replacing your brake pads is to remove the wheel. Using the 5mm Allen key, loosen and remove the bolts that hold the wheel in place. Once the wheel is loose, gently remove it from the bike frame and place it safely to one side.
Remove The Old Brake Pads
With the wheel off, you can now access the brake pads. Using your fingers, gently pull the brake pads away from the caliper. Some brake pads may be attached to the caliper by small retention pins or clips. If this is the case, use your pliers to remove these before taking out the pads.
Install The New Brake Pads
Once the old pads are removed, clean the caliper and brake rotor with a clean rag to remove any debris or dirt that may have accumulated. Then, take your new brake pads and slide them into the caliper, making sure they are seated correctly. Some brake pads may require clips or retention pins to be reinserted, so make sure to attach these accordingly.
Reassemble The Bike
With new brake pads installed and in the correct position, it is time to reassemble the bike. Gently slide the wheel back onto the frame, making sure that it is seated securely. Then, use the 5mm Allen key to tighten the bolts that hold the wheel in place.
Replacing your mountain bike brake pads is a simple process that can be done at home with just a few tools. By following these simple steps, you can install new brake pads and keep your bike in top shape. Remember to always test your brakes before hitting the trails to ensure that they are working correctly.
