Dropper Seatpost Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is a dropper post?
A dropper seatpost is an adjustable seatpost that allows riders to quickly and easily change the saddle height without the need for tools. This is done through a handlebar-mounted lever, a remote, or a mechanism on the seatpost itself.
Why would I want to use a dropper seatpost?
A dropper seatpost is beneficial for mountain bikers who encounter varying terrain. By lowering the seat, you can improve your maneuverability and stability when descending steep trails. Raised, it allows efficient pedaling on flat or uphill terrain. It’s all about maximising control and efficiency.
How does a dropper seatpost work?
Most dropper seatposts use a hydraulic mechanism that is activated by a lever. When the lever is pressed, it releases the lock on the post, allowing it to move up or down. Once the lever is released, the post locks into the new desired position.
Are dropper seatposts one size fits all?
No, dropper seatposts come in various diameters to fit different bike frames and also vary in travel or the amount of height adjustability they offer. It's important to choose a dropper seatpost that matches the specifications of your bike frame.
How do I determine the right travel length for a dropper seatpost?
The right travel length depends on your leg length, the frame size, and your riding style. Generally, more travel is better for technical trails where significant saddle height changes are common. However, there has to be enough room in the bike frame for the seatpost to fully drop without bottoming out.
Can I install a dropper seatpost on any bike?
While most modern mountain bikes are compatible with dropper seatposts, not all frames accommodate them. Check your frame for the seatpost diameter and internal or external routing options for the cable or hose.
How do I maintain a dropper seatpost?
Regular maintenance, including cleaning the post, keeping the actuator and remote clean and lubricated, and inspecting for damage, will keep your dropper seatpost functioning properly. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for service intervals, but in our experience - they are pretty reliable.
Are there weight limits for dropper seatposts?
Some dropper seatposts have rider weight limits, which are typically noted by the manufacturer and can be found in the technical info & specifications.
How much does a dropper seatpost cost?
Prices can vary widely based on brand, quality, and features. Basic models may start around £120, while higher-end models can cost upwards of £400. Consider how the features and designs match your riding requirements and specifications.
Can a dropper seatpost be used for road biking?
While dropper seatposts are less common in road biking, they can be used on certain types of road bikes. The benefit on roads is less apparent than on mountain trails, though - so we usually stay clear of recommending them. Dropper seatposts however, can be game changing when fitted to a gravel bike.
Does the weather affect a dropper seatpost's performance?
Not so much the weather, but the effects of weather can - meaning that dirt, mud, and water can also affect the performance of the dropper post. Simple cleaning and maintenance avoids these issues though, and these dropper posts are designed for mountain biking in all conditions.
Are dropper seatposts reliable?
Modern dropper seatposts are generally reliable, but as with any mechanical component, they can fail. Choosing a reputable brand and adhering to proper maintenance schedules can increase reliability. Some of the best brands we supply include KS Suspension, Thomson and Fox.
Can I adjust the speed of a dropper seatpost?
Some models allow you to adjust the return speed of the post. Check the manufacturer's instructions for how to make this adjustment on specific models.
Do dropper seatposts add much weight to my bike?
Yes, a dropper seatpost will add some weight compared to a fixed seatpost, but the performance benefits on variable terrain usually outweigh the slight weight penalty.
Is it worth upgrading to a Dropper Post?
Yes! If you are cycling anything which can be classed as technical - a dropper post will have you continuing to ride, without having to pull over and adjust your post.
Can you store a bike with a dropper post down?
You will be fine storing a dropper post compressed for a short period of time, however avoid storing the bike with the dropper post down for long periods of time.
Dropper post going down when Sat on?
If your dropper post will not stay up, and goes down under pressure - then it could be one of a number of issues. The remote cable housing can become kinked, which prevents the cable from locking out. Refer to the manual of the dropper post for further information, or your local bike mechanic.
