Cycling Jersey FAQ

What is a cycling jersey?

A cycling jersey is a specialized shirt designed for cyclists. They are typically made from moisture-wicking materials to keep riders cool and dry, and come with features like back pockets for storage and a longer cut in the back for better coverage while riding. There’s a massive array to choose from - and there’s also different jerseys for different cycling disciplines, ranging from road cycling across to mountain biking.

Why should I wear a cycling jersey?

Cycling jerseys offer comfort, convenience, and enhanced performance. They manage sweat, prevent chafing, and are cut to fit well when you're leaning forward on the bike. Pockets on the back hold essentials like snacks, tools, and your phone within easy reach so they are incredibly handy to have. One of the biggest reasons to own a cycling jersey is just how bad regular tshirts feel and perform when on the bike.

What materials are cycling jerseys made from?

Most cycling jerseys are made from synthetic materials like polyester or poly-blends because they’re excellent at moisture management and have the right amount of stretch. Some may also include elastane (spandex) for additional flexibility, or mesh panels for extra ventilation. There are also cycling jerseys which contain merino wool, which also has excellent sweat wicking properties.

What’s the difference between a road and mountain biking jersey?

Road cycling jerseys often have a tighter fit for aerodynamics and back pockets for storage. Mountain biking jerseys might be looser for a casual style and greater movement, and sometimes forgo back pockets since riders often use a backpack or hydration pack as part of their setup. Mountain Bike Jerseys look very much like motocross jerseys (very cool!) especially from brands such as Troy Lee Designs.

Do I need a long sleeve or short sleeve cycling jersey?

The choice between long sleeve and short sleeve cycling jerseys depends on weather conditions and personal preference. Long sleeves offer more protection from the sun and cold weather, while short sleeves or sleeveless jerseys keep you cooler in warm temperatures. Ideally, a good cycling wardrobe would contain both options.

How should a cycling jersey fit?

A cycling jersey should fit snugly without being too tight. It should stay in place when you're leaning forward and not flap in the wind, while still allowing full range of motion. Fit can vary by brand, so checking specific size charts is recommended. It’s also worth noting that a number of ‘relaxed’ fitting jerseys are increasing in popularity, with all of the performance benefits of a jersey - but a more relaxed fit for enjoying a mid-ride coffee in!

Can I wear a regular t-shirt instead of a cycling jersey?

While you can wear a regular t-shirt, cycling jerseys offer specific benefits that a regular t-shirt doesn't, like sweat management, convenient storage, and a cut designed for cycling posture. Wearing normal clothing for cycling, very quickly becomes very uncomfortable.

How do I care for my cycling jersey?

To care for your cycling jersey, follow the washing instructions on the label, and that’s about it! Generally, it's best to wash it in cool water on a gentle cycle and hang it to dry. Avoid using fabric softeners as they can degrade the moisture-wicking properties of the fabric which help maintain your core temperature.

Are there cycling jerseys for different weather conditions?

Yes, there are jerseys designed for a variety of weather conditions. Lightweight and ventilated jerseys are for hot weather, thermal jerseys are for cold conditions, and there are also windproof and waterproof jerseys for riding in adverse weather. These jerseys are often segregated as summer/winter jerseys.

Why do some cycling jerseys have zips?

Zips allow you to regulate your body temperature by providing ventilation when needed. Full-zip jerseys can be completely opened up which is ideal for climbs or hot days, while partial zip jerseys provide a more traditional look with some temperature regulation.
