Best Dynamo Lights

A Dynamo Light is a bike light that uses a dynamo hub on the wheel of the bike, to convert the energy produced from the hub/wheel of the bike spinning, to produce electricity which then powers the light. Think of the dynamo hub as a mini generator which has been designed to provide power to the light.

Dynamo Lights are not new, but in 2024 they are brighter and better than ever before - and Dynamo Lights make a lot of sense for many riders, especially those using their bike for commuting as well as touring. Dynamo Lights are most popular with riders who bikepack or take their bike on long endurance rides, where lighting can be required for long periods of time, which would see most battery powered bike lights run out of charge.

Dynamo Lights are always on, as long as the bike is being ridden - and most dynamo lights also stay on when pedaling has stopped, for a short period of time, ensuring that the rider remains visible when pulling up and stopping at junctions etc, this has become known in the industry as a ‘standlight’.

Many wheel manufacturers provide wheelsets complete with their own dynamo hubs, but many riders prefer to choose their own hub and fit it to their own wheels. It’s mainly road bikes which benefit from the addition of Dynamo Lights - as clever beam patterns provide enough light for commuting and on rural unlit roads, but the beam pattern of a Dynamo Light is not well matched to off road riding, so we always recommend choosing battery powered Mountain Bike Lights.

Dynamo Rear Lights are also available, and these lights are usually attached to cables which run from the Dynamo Hub to the rear headlight. These rear lights use LED technology to provide strong and reliable performance.

Some riders criticize the dynamo system because it adds drag, but for most of us - the drag produced will have no serious consequences if you are riding at normal speeds. Many Dynamo Lights also have USB ports to charge other devices, such as your mobile phone or cycling computer - which is perfect for those riding long distances.
