Winter
MTB Tyres
Wintry conditions are guaranteed in the UK - and although the days are shorter, winter provides some excellent mountain biking opportunities. These opportunities need to be carefully considered though, as heading out without the right setup and products (such as waterproofs) can render a wintry day mountain biking almost impossible.
One of the most important considerations for mountain biking in winter is kitting your bike out with some winter rubber. Winter mountain bike tyres are more aggressive in their tread design than summer and all year round mountain bike tyres - and for good reason, these tyres need to cut through the wet, muddy gloop to find traction - whilst also being able to handle wet rocks and roots. The wide block tread patterns found on the above range of tyres, has been designed to keep the tyre clear from mud and debris - allowing it to continue to find grip.
Softer compounds are also used for winter mountain bike tyres, providing all important grip in slippery conditions. These soft compounds however do wear down quicker - which is why high end tyre manufacturers blend a number of different compounds and synthetic materials to provide all of the grip required, in a harder wearing tyre. Many mountain bikers also choose to use a more aggressive tread pattern on the front wheel of the bike, allowing it to break, control and turn better - and a less aggressive tyre on the rear, where grip is less important.
