Saddles
If your road bike saddle is not comfortable - it’s likely that you need to swap it out for something more comfortable. The market is full of different road bike saddles, all with different designs, focus and features - we’ve put all of our road bike saddles/seats in one place on this page, alloiwng you to view all available options in one place.
There are a few reasons why you may need a new bike saddle, one of the biggest reasons is that your sit bones do not sit comfortably on the saddle, it may also be that your soft tissue is weight bearing if the saddle is not the right fit for you.
The amount of padding on the above saddles varies depending upon riding requirements and preferences - leisure and town bikes for example, require more padding than than other types of bike, as most of the weight when riding these bikes is on the soft tissue. Road bike saddles do not require as much padding, as weight on a road bike is more equally distributed between the pedals, handlebars and the saddle itself. Less padding on a road saddle also provides a more solid base on which to cycle from, and with the use of padded shorts - a firm saddle can be a comfortable and efficient option.
The vast majority of the comfort of a saddle depends on the shape of the saddle. Most road bike saddles are either flat, or slope downwards towards the edges of the saddle. A flatter saddle allows the rider to move more on the saddle, whereas a more curved saddle keeps the rider in the centre of the saddle.
Road Bike Saddle sizing is usually measured in widths, with small, medium and large being the most commonly labelled sizes. Another design feature of saddles which is noticeable is cutout areas of the saddles, these cutouts are also known as pressure relief channels. These cutouts can also constitute a short nose saddle.
Road Bike Saddles can also be made from a wide array of different materials - and not suprisingly, the lighter the saddle, the more expensive it is, some of the most expensive saddles are made from carbon fibre and titanium. Saddles are one of the most cost effective ways to cut down the weight of your road bike - many saddles also use different materials on different parts of the seat, allowing for different padding levels & grip areas on different parts of the saddle.
