Disc Brake
Pads
Brakes are one of the most important components on any bike - regardless whether that’s a road bike or a mountain bike. Responsible for not only the safety of the rider, effective brakes and braking is also one of the best ways to ride faster and better, both recreationally and competitively.
At Westbrook Cycles, we stock and supply a full range of bike brakes and brake components, including Disc Brake and replacement and upgraded Disc Brake pads. There’s a massive increase in bikes with disc brakes at the moment, with both road bikes and mountain bikes using disc brakes.
Instead of Rim brakes, which use the rim of the wheel to apply braking pressure to, disc brakes use a mounted metal disc which is mounted on the hub of the wheel. The brake disc then rotates through a caliper, which has brake pads contained within it. When you squeeze on the brakes, the pads are applied to the disc - slowing the bike down.
There are a number of considerations to make when purchasing new disc brake pads, first of all the shape of the pads - each caliper uses different shape pads, so cross referencing with your bike specification should list brake pad sizes and shapes which will fit. There are also a number of different pads that you can choose, with semi-metallic, organic and Sintered pads all being available.
It’s a good time to change the brake pads on your bike, when there is very little of the braking material left on the flat metal surface on the pad. Although each caliper and pad will have slightly different ways of removal and fitting - it can usually be a DIY job for those with some bike knowledge. When you are changing the brake pads, it’s a good idea to give the caliper and surrounding area a clean, removing brake dust.
