Shimano Deore XT, often referred to as just Shimano XT, is the level at which the performance starts getting really ramped up. This level of components sits between the entry-level, budget focused Shimano Deore range, and below the top-tier XTR range. It represents a good balance of performance and technology that has been trickled down from XTR, but at a much more accessible price point.

The Shimano XT groupset was first introduced to the world in 1982, and rose to popularity for its balance of performance, reliability and affordability. Although it may not be quite as light as the XTR groupset, the components often share technologies, which allows the Shimano XT range to bring racing performance to the masses at a much more manageable price.

The latest iteration of the Shimano XT derailleur uses their Shadow+ technology, which includes a clutch system to maintain chain tension resulting in a quieter, smoother ride, and fewer dropped chains. 12 speed has been introduced to the range, allowing a large range of gears to suit any terrain. To accomodate this increase in gear range, the Shimano XT 12 speed cassette comes in a 10-51t ratio, providing ample gearing options for tackling both steep climbs and fast descents.

Shimano XT brakes have also seen numerous improvements over the years, with the introduction of 4-pot brakes, providing a huge amount of stopping power and control. These 4-pot versions also offer 22% increase in braking force over the standard 2-pot varieties.
