Since its introduction, Shimano SLX components have had their place slotted in between the budget focused Deore range, and the more performance orientated XT range. This allows the Shimano SLX groupset to offer the best of both worlds, providing lighter parts than Deore, but at a lower cost than XT.

History of Shimano SLX

The Shimano SLX series was intended to bring the technology and reliability seen in the higher ranges, in a more cost-effective package to make it appealling to a wider range of riders. Technologies originally reserved for XT and the highest level XTR groupsets, started to trickle down to a much more accessible price point, giving a perfect opportunity for riders wanting to upgrade from more entry-level offerings. The latest iteration, Shimano SLX M7100, brings 12 speed and their Hyperglide+ technology to the range, to offer a wider range of gearing with cleaner, crisper gear changes. The Shimano SLX groupset brings durability, precision, and value, and is well suited for enduro bikes and trail bikes.

Component Highlights

The Shimano SLX 12-speed derailleur features Shadow+ technology, which has again trickled down from higher up the ranges. This tech incorporates a clutch mechanism which improves chain retention and helps to quieten your ride by reducing chain slap. A longer cage allows for a wider range of gears, and is ideally paired with the Shimano SLX 12 speed cassette for the best compatibility.

The Shimano SLX crankset is only available in a 1x setup and comes with either a 32T or 34T chainring option. Build quality and strength are impressive, offering exceptional value for money.

Perhaps the most popular component we sell in this range are the Shimano SLX brakes, mainly due to their unbeatable value for money. Brakes are never a component worth compromising on, and the Shimano SLX offers fantastic stopping power in a lighweight package, easily comparable to brakes with a much higher RRP. Both lever and caliper designs have taken cues from their XT and XTR siblings, incorporating a positive level feel and a really nice balance of modulation and power.

Conclusion

Overall, the Shimano SLX M7100 series is ideal for the majority of riders, offering great performance suited to trail, enduro or even XC riding. Technology that has trickled down from higher tiers has made its way firmly into this level and now brings features previously reserved for the pros to the masses. Durability has also not been compromised, so these light weight components also come with a high level of longevity.
