A Time Trial bike and a Triathlon bike look very similar, but the Triathlon bikes, featured above, aren't bound by UCI regulations, meaning they have more freedom when designing the frames, often resulting some extreme looking machines. The bike leg of a Triathlon is often much longer that the average time trial, and so other considerations are taken into account, such as storing food and water, and providing a position that is not only aerodynamic, but also comfortable enough to hold for extended periods of time. The geometry of a Tri bike also serves to preserve the leg muscles for the all-important final leg, the run.

Can you use a road bike for Triathlon?

There is nothing stopping you entering a Triathlon using a road bike, however over longer distances you will be at a significant disadvantage if your competition are all riding dedicated Tri bikes. Although a road bike is likely to allow for a more comfortable position over long periods than a Triathlon bike, even an aero road bike will be significantly slower when riding flat-out due to the significant aerodynamic advantages of the Tri bike and the position of the rider.

Above are what we deem to be the best Triathlon bikes available at the moment, from brands at the forefront of the sport, such as Giant, Scott, Cadex and Orbea. Although you can view our complete range of Time Trial and Triathlon bikes, here, the bikes on this page are the ones designed specifically as a Triathlon bike, and so they may not be legal to race in UCI governed Time Trials.
