The use of Disc Brakes on Road Bikes is a result of the increased use of technology and in our opinion, the widespread use of disc brakes on road bikes is one of the most significant leaps forward in road bike performance.

Although Disc Brakes were once limited to mountain bikes - increasingly road bike manufacturers have been phasing out rim brakes, instead fitting their road bikes with specialist disc brakes which provide fantastic levels of performance. The choice between rim brakes and disc brakes on a road bike continues to divide, with traditionalists sticking to rim brake road bikes.

Although the purposes of disc brakes and rim brakes are the same - to bring a bike to a controlled stop or to reduce speed, the two different types of brakes do this in very different ways. Whilst rim brakes apply pressure to the rim of the wheel, disc brakes work in applying pressure to a brake disc/rotor at the centre of the wheel.

Disc Brakes provide increased braking power and performance, as well as better braking performance across poor weather conditions. Disc Brakes are however more difficult to maintain, and are more expensive to replace compared to rim brakes.
